Rob Smith - Former Director General, Department of Communities and Local Government
With more than 30 years experience in the civil service, Rob Smith is now a training consultant and mentor with specialist knowledge in the fields of local government and education. He is also a Deputy Chair of Trustees for The National Literacy Trust and a Trustee of The Place To Be ( therapeutic counselling for primary school children ).
Rob began his career in the civil service in 1974 with his first assignment in the Northern Ireland Office. He held a number of posts in Belfast and London including Principal Private Secretary to a Minister and then two Permanent Secretaries. Rob then moved to the Department for Education, becoming Principal Private Secretary to the Secretary of State. He was very involved in the setting-up of a number of Government programmes after 1997 such as ‘SureStart’ and ‘Connexions’. In 2000, he was appointed the first Director General for the Government Offices of the Regions. He then became Director General for Regional Development in the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.
