Shivangi Medhi - Equality and Diversity Officer, London Borough of Hackney

Shivangi Medhi joined Hackney Council in 2007 as the Equality and Diversity Policy Officer (Service Delivery) and has 6 years experience in Local Government.  Since joining Hackney, she has been instrumental in helping the Council improve to the ‘Achieving’ level of the Equality Framework for Local Government.  She has improved the equality impact assessment process, facilitated equality related workshops and developed a LGBT Staff Forum which assisted in the Council being rated as the 3rd highest ranking London Borough (43rd overall) in the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index 2010.

Prior to joining Hackney Council, Shivangi was the HR Diversity Manager for Waltham Forest Council, responsible for driving forward the Council’s HR diversity agenda.  During her time in Waltham Forest , she organised a BME staff conference leading to the formation of a BME staff forum, provided equality training aimed at Members and senior officers, facilitated job finding skills workshops with local community groups and developed a Communication Card which helped to improve interaction between Deaf people and local public service providers.

For the last five years, Shivangi has been a Management Committee Member for Ashiana Network (a charity aimed at preventing domestic violence and empowering South Asian, Turkish and Iranian women), providing policy and employment advice.  She holds a BA (Hons) in Sociology and Criminology and a PgDip in Theory and Practice of Human Rights from the University of Essex.
