Rt Hon Michael Meacher MP

Rt. Hon Michael Meacher MP (Lab, Oldham West and Royton) - Former Minister of State for the Environment

Michael Meacher has been the Labour MP for Oldham West and Royton since the 1970 General Election. During his time in politics he has served in the Governments of Harold Wilson and Jim Callaghan as Under Secretary for Industry and Under Secretary for Health and Social Security. In 1983 he became a member of the Shadow Cabinet, in which he served for 14 years, and contested the Labour Party Deputy Leadership.

After the Labour victory at the 1997 General Election Michael served in the Government of Tony Blair as Minister of State for the Environment. He held this position until June 2003 and was one of the longest serving Ministers in the Government. In 2007, Michael announced that he would run against Gordon Brown and John McDonnell for the leadership of the Labour Party, eventually stepping aside and supporting McDonnell. He was born in 1939 and was educated at Berkhamstead School, New College Oxford and the LSE.
