Sylvia Thomson - Former Senior Civil Servant

Sylvia worked for 18 years at HM Treasury, including spells advising on the Aid Budget and a variety of other public expenditure roles. During this time, she led a Cross-cutting Review of Government Services for Small Business in 2002. She also spent 3 years working on the Sure Start programme to help young children and their parents in severely disadvantaged areas, including a 2 year spell on secondment as its first Deputy Director. As Deputy Director she made contacts with many children's charities and began to appreciate the unique contribution which the third sector can make to society and to the economy. She set up Third Sector Partner to help develop the capacity of smaller charities in particular to continue to make this contribution.

Sylvia has also worked in the private sector as an industrial relations negotiator in the Engineering Industry, and became expert in employment law, organisation development and change management. She has also had a variety of roles in the voluntary sector as a volunteer, manager and consultant, with arts, education and social welfare charities. She is currently Honorary Treasurer of The Children's Society.
