Rt. Hon Richard Caborn MP (Lab, Sheffield Central) - Former Minister for Sport in the Department of Culture, Media and Sport
Richard Caborn, Member of Parliament for Sheffield Central since 1983, is the Prime Minister's World Cup Ambassador. Prior to this appointment, Richard was Minister of State for Sport in the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, an office he held from June 2001 until June 2007. He served as Minister for Trade at the Department for Trade and Industry (1999-2001) and was Minister of State for the Regions, Regeneration and Planning at the Department for the Environment, Transport and the Regions (1997-1999). He became a Privy Councillor in 1999.
Richard was a Trade Union official at Firth Brown Sheffield and a founder member of the Parliamentary Anti-Apartheid Movement. He was Vice President of the Sheffield Trades Council and is a member of the Amicus union. Born in October 1943, Richard was educated at Hurlfield Comprehensive School, Sheffield, Granville College of Education and Sheffield Polytechnic.
