Paul Clark MP - MP for Gillingham

Paul Clark was elected as Member of Parliament for Gillingham in May 1997. Since June 2007 he has been Private Parliamentary Secretary to Ed Balls, Secretary of State at the DCSF and from 2005 to 2007 he was Parliamentary Private secretary to the Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott.

He held the position of Assistant Government Whip from June 2003 with responsibility for the South East and the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM). Previously he was Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Rt Hon Lord Falconer whilst Lord Falconer was Minister of State in the Home Office (2002 - 03) and at the ODPM (2001-02). He also held the position of PPS to the Lord Chancellor, the Rt Hon Derry Irvine (1999-2001).

Paul Clark is Secretary of the Thames Gateway All Party Parliamentary Group, and is heavily involved in the progression of the Thames Gateway project as a Board Member of the Thames Gateway Kent Partnership. Paul's areas of interest include transport, regeneration and the environment.

He was appointed as a Board member and Trustee of Groundwork Medway/Swale in September 2001.

Before becoming a Member of Parliament Paul Clark worked as Centre Manager for the Trade Union Congress National Education Centre (1986 -1997) and at the Amalgamated Engineering Union (Amicus) as researcher and personal assistant to the General Secretary (1980 1986). Paul Clark was elected to the Gillingham Borough Council 1982 - 1990, and was Labour Deputy Leader 1983 - 1989, and Labour Group Leader 1989 - 1990.

Paul was born in Gillingham and attended Gillingham Grammar School. He now lives in the constituency with his wife and two children.
