John Stewart

John Stewart - Professor of Health History

John Stewart is Professor of Health History at Glasgow Caledonian University and Director of the Centre for the Social History of Health and Health Care, run jointly by Glasgow Caledonian and the University of Strathclyde. He was previously at Oxford Brookes University where he was Professor of the History of Medicine and Social Policy. His research interests include the history of child psychiatry; the post-war European welfare states; and social welfare in modern Britain and Scotland. Research outputs include Taking Stock: Scottish Social Welfare after Devolution (Bristol, 2004); The Battle for Health: A Political History of the Socialist Medical Association (Aldershot, 1999); and articles in journals such as English Historical Review, Bulletin of the History of Medicine, Twentieth Century British History; and Annals of Science. His next book, contracted to Cambridge University Press, will be on the history of the welfare in post-war Europe.
