Professor Derek Birrell

Professor Derek Birrell - Social Adminstration & Policy

Derek Birrell is Professor of Social Administration at the University of Ulster and was until recently Head of School of Policy Studies. He is also a member of Social and Policy Research Institute at the University. He has mainly carried out research in the areas of: social policy in Northern Ireland, including social care, housing and the voluntary sector; devolution in the United Kingdom and cross border cooperation in Ireland. He has recently published articles on the Integration of Health and Social Care, the Disintegration of Social Service Departments in England, Devolution and Quangos, Devolution and Local Taxation, Devolution and the Westminster Parliament, the Northern Ireland Civil Service and the Review of Public Administration. His book, The Governance of Northern Ireland by Direct Rule will be published shortly by Manchester University Press. He is also currently a subject reviewer in Social Policy and Administration for the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education in England.
