John Torney – Principal Clerk, Northern Ireland Assembly

John Torney is the Principal Clerk of Statutory Committees in the Northern Ireland Assembly, a post which he first took up in 2001. Over the course of a long career in the Northern Ireland Civil Service, John was involved in with the Assembly from its creation in 1998. He has been Clerk to the Education Committee, the Further and Higher Education Committee and the Committee on Standards and Priveleges. Prior to this John has worked in the Departments of Finance and Personnel, Economic Development and Environment.

A graduate of Queen's University Belfast; John has also been seconded as temporary General Manager of the Londonderry Inner City Trust which promoted the physical regeneration of property within the walled city of Derry. He was also seconded in 1991 to the Derry Boston Ventures Group which supported trade links between Derry and Boston and, in particular, promoted inward investment from Boston to Londonderry.
